Car Crashes Through Guardrail, Comes within Feet of River

A car crashed into mud along the banks of the Porter River on Thursday night.

A vehicle careened through a guardrail and about 50 feet through mud on the edge of the Porter River on Thursday night. Nobody was injured in the crash, which police said could have been caused because the driver had a “medical episode.” The sport utility vehicle stopped just a few feet from the edge of the water at the end of River Street. “Fortunately, the tide was out,” said Sgt. Robert Bettencourt, a Danvers police spokesman. The crash was reported at 8:34 p.m. and the vehicle was removed from the mud by about 10 p.m. Officers Jason Skane and Dana Martin and Sgt. David Joyce all responded, as did the Danvers Fire Department and Lyons ambulance.
