Higher Academic Standards for School Sports: Make Sense or Too Tough?

Let us know what you think about proposed changes to the athletic eligibility requirements for student-athletes at Danvers High School.

Higher academic standards for Danvers High School student-athletes are being eyed by the Danvers School Committee. The changes would be part of edits to the high school's student handbook and, if adopted when the committee meets next month, would bar students to participate in sports and extracurricular activities if they have failed a class in the prior marking period. It was not immediately clear how many students could be affected by the change. It would go into place at the start of the winter sports season. The change received a positive reception from the committee last week and will be up for a final vote in September. Does the new policy make sense? Or is it too tough? Could it keep some athletes off the feidl or court?  Tell us in…

Allaying Concerns, School Leaders Say DHS Will Be Ready for First Day of School

Construction at Danvers High School will be wrapped up by the first day of school in September.

School leaders said this week that Danvers High School will be ready for students on Sept. 5, even as work continues on the first of three phases to renovate and reconstruct the school. School Committee Chairman Arthur Skarmeas said his last visit to the school a few weeks ago had him “very stressed” while walking around in the building. “It didn’t look good,” he said, later adding that it looked like a mess and he did not see anyone working. Superintendent Lisa Dana and Principal Susan Ambrozavitch both assured Skarmeas that the school will be ready for the arrival of teachers on Sept. 4 and students for the first day of school on Sept. 5. “Every day we some more progress,” Ambrozavitch said, adding that the completion of finish work will…

To the voters of Danvers: I appreciate your support in the recent election and look forward to serving you for three more years. Please feel free to call me regarding issues of interest or concern at any time. Much gratitude is extended to the many citizens who willingly displayed my signs and handed out flyers. I would like to especially recognize Deb Zorzonello who took the timeto write a letter on my behalf.   The coverage given by DCAT, The Salem News, The Danvers Herald and Danvers Patch was outstanding. Finally I would be remiss if I didn't thank my challengers, Alan Vervaeke, Manny Lopes and David Thomson for their willingness to come forward and serve on the School Committee. Thank you for your support and trust. I am honored. …
