A new Suffolk University/7NEWS (WHDH) poll shows a strong lead for Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey over Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez in the race for the U.S. Senate special election. The poll of 500 likely voters has Markey at 52 percent and Gomez at 35 percent. Eleven percent of voters in the poll were undecided. A third-party candidate, Richard Heos of the Twelve Visions Party, got 1 percent and another 1 percent refused to respond. David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston, said along with the announcement of the poll that Markey has "a large lead over his Republican opponent who voters are unsure about." There is a lot of campaigning to do before the Democrat and Republican face off on June 25 in the U.S. Senate special election.
After months of campaigning we now know who is going head-to-head in the June 25 special U.S. Senate election. Democratic Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) took the Democratic vote in the Tuesday election over fellow Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston). Political newcomer and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset came out on top of a field of Republican candidates - including more seasoned opponents former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and State Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk. With a month-and-a-half of campaigning still to come, we wanted to stop and ask: if the special election was held today - who would you vote for right now? Markey or Gomez? Here's how Danvers voted in the U.S. Senate Primary on Tuesday. Overall turnout was 15 percent of registered voters.
The race to become Massachusetts' next U.S. Senator now comes down to Democrat Congressman Ed Markey and Republican businessman and former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez. Tuesday in Danvers, the results were similar to the final tally statewide -- Gomez with a solid victory over his Republican opponents Michael Sullivan and Dan Winslow and Markey with about 5 points on Democratic opponent and fellow Congressman Stephen Lynch. Candidates for U.S. Senate Democratic nomination squared off in Lowell Monday.
U.S. Congressmen Stephen Lynch and Edward Markey met in their second debate Monday ahead of the Democratic U.S. Senate special primary in a contest that contained few fireworks outside of an exchange on health care. The debate, held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and sponsored by the college and the Boston Herald, lasted about 45 minutes and touched a wide variety of issues on which the two Democrats mostly agreed. An early question was asked about the candidates' positions on the Affordable Care Act. Markey (D-Malden) voted in favor of the bill that passed in 2010 while Lynch (D-South Boston) was one of few Democrats who opposed it. The Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate meet in their second debate.
The combatants for the Democratic nomination in the U.S. Senate special election will square off Monday night in Lowell for their second debate leading up to the April 30 primary. Congressmen Edward Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) will participate in the debate being held at 7:30 p.m. at Durgin Hall on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The debate is being sponsored by UMass Lowell’s Center for Public Opinion and the Boston Herald. Questions for the debate will be posed by UMass Lowell students while the moderator will be reporter Jaclyn Cashman, according to the university. It was a very busy week in the race for U.S. Senate. Things started to get heated as the candidates continue to race toward the April 30 primaries. We saw candidates lashing out at party backing, another facing an ethics complaint, new poll numbers, and more. Let’s start with the Democrats this week. Democratic candidates Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Edward Markey (D-Malden) will face off in a second debate Monday night in Lowell. U.S. Rep. and Senate candidate Stephen Lynch (D-Boston) took aim at his party leaders for getting behind U.S. Rep. Edward Markey (D-Malden) in the primary fight, reported the Boston Herald. “They haven’t been fair,” Lynch told the Herald about the Democratic leaders. “No they haven’t been fair. I think they’ve done their best to discourage people from sending me contributions from Washington. They’ve basically said Markey’s our guy, don’t give to Lynch.” Lynch faces an uphill battle as the party bosses have backed the Malden Democrat. State party believes congressman is using taxpayer-funded resources for his campaign among other complaints, Boston Herald reports.
Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) will face an ethics complaint from the Bay State Republican Party that alleges coordination between the U.S. Senate candidate’s campaign and congressional office and improper use of footage from Congress in TV ads, according to a report in the Boston Herald Tuesday. MassGOP Executive Director Nate Little told the Herald they believe Markey has been using taxpayer-funded resources from his congressional office for campaign purposes. The state GOP plans on filing a letter with the House Committee on Ethics Tuesday, according to the Herald. The Democratic candidates for Senate this week talked about the war in Iraq, launched more television ads, opened regional and local campaign offices and continued to get the word out as the April 30 primary draws near. The week marked the 10-year anniversary of the start of the Iraq war, and with a hotly contested U.S. Senate Primary just over a month away, both Congressmen seeking the Democratic nomination found themselves defending their votes.
