Former Church Now a Pile of Rubble

The old Methodist church at 78 Holten St. has been demolished to make way for a new mixed-use building with a cafe and apartments above it.

The former Methodist church on Holten Street is now just a pile of wooden rubble. On Thursday afternoon, a work crew at the site operated heavy machinery to scoop up the rubble and cart it away. A worker said the building, which dates back to 1870, was torn down Wednesday and the debris would be removed over Thursday and Friday. The property owner, Peter Pantazelos of Danvers, is planning to construct a new building at 78 Holten St. which will house a cafe on the bottom floor with six apartments over two floors above. An attorney for the project told town officials the old building was unsafe and needed to be torn down. The new structure will look very similar, however, is about two feet shorter and won't be as deep. The old building …

Former Church Due to be Torn Down Soon

The former Methodist church at 78 Holten St. will soon be demolished to make way for a new cafe with apartments above it.

Plans are moving along to tear down a former church on Holten Street across from McKinnon's Market and replace it with a cafe and several apartments above. The existing building at 78 Holten St., which dates to the 1870s and most recently housed Yellow Jackets Gymnastics, has been marked for demolition in recent days and will likely be torn down as soon as a permit is issued from the town. Building Inspector Richard Maloney said on Friday that the owner, Peter Pantazelos of Danvers, is currently having the utility lines turned off and detached from the building and had just signed some preliminary paperwork for demolition. Pantazelos hasn't applied for the necessary permit yet, but Maloney …

Out with the old, in with the new. It'll be great getting out of your car at McKinnon's and not have to look at that eyesore. Kudos for the Town of Danvers for redevelopment. I'm sure it'll be great for the town to also add much needed housing!   more ›

Cafe, Apartments Planned to Replace Former Church

A cafe is planned to go in a new building planned for Holten Street.

A former church on Holten Street is planned to be replaced by a new building with a cafe and six apartments. The building at 78 Holten St. dates back to 1857 and was mostly recently used by Yellow Jackets Gymnastics but it has been empty for the past few months. Danvers resident Peter Pantazelos bought the building in December. The plan to tear down the building has already been reviewed by the Preservation Commission, which gave its OK. The plan needs an OK from the Zoning Board Appeals because of the mix of retail and residential use in an industrial zone. It will also have to go before the Planning Board. The yet-to-be named cafe on the first floor will have 35-40 seats and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. James Cote, the attorney …

I hope the new building doesn't look like the old building. It was quite ugly.   more ›
