Selectman to be Arraigned on Assault Charge Tuesday

Keith Lucy, a member of the Danvers Board of Selectmen, will be arraigned on Tuesday in Salem District Court on an assault charge.

A member of the Danvers Board of Selectmen is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on assault charges in connection with an incident at Town Hall on Election Day in September. Keith G. Lucy, 47, of 7 Ashley Lane faces a single count of assault after the incident on Sept. 6, the day of the primary election. The charges were not filed by police but instead by a citizen, who sought a hearing in front of a Salem District Court magistrate. That magistrate, who heard the complaint from Town Meeting member John Fratus of Appleton Street in a hearing closed to the public, found there was probable cause to issue a criminal complaint against Lucy. He was then issued a summons on Oct. 25 to appear at an arraignment on Tuesday. The assault charge is a …

May 7th everyone is the date for showing Keith Lucy that he cannot threaten and bully Danvers residents any longer. We waited too long already to get rid of this angry loose cannon. Plus I am tired of being asked by my friends in other towns, esp Topsfield, why we continue to elect this deranged individual.   more ›

VIDEO: Joan Lovely Celebrates Primary Win

Joan Lovely and her supporters joined at the Moose Lodge in Salem Thursday night to celebrate her victory.

Joan Lovely said her victory in the Second Essex Senate race primary was a team effort, and she plans on succeeding Sen. Fred Berry with a November win against Republican challenger Richard Jolitz. After the win was made official, Lovely joined supporters, which included Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, Rep. John Keenan, Police Chief Paul Tucker, city councilors and school committee members at the Moose Lodge — headquarters  for her campaign during Thursday's election. Danvers is in Second Essex District, along with Beverly, Peabody, Salem and Topsfield. Lovely thanked her family, supporters, Berry and even her opponents — Edward Carroll, Mary-Ellen Manning and John Slattery — during her acceptance speech. Lovely ended up with 50 percent of the …

Slattery Commends Opponents for Hard Work After Second Place Finish

State Senate candidate John Slattery said he felt like his team ran a good campaign and had lots of support throughout the district, the final result, however, was not as he had hoped.

Former Peabody state Rep. John Slattery was gracious to both his main opponents in the Senate race Thursday night as he made his concession speech at the Peabody Ancient Order of Hibernians Hall. Slattery, who finished well behind Salem city councilor Joan Lovely in the Democratic primary, commended Lovely particularly for her hard work over the past several months. According to total vote counts across the Second Essex District, Lovely won with 7,450, Slattery came in second with 4,418, Mary-Ellen Manning picked up 2,610 and Edward Carroll received 309. The district includes Danvers, plus Beverly, Peabody, Salem and Topsfield. "I think Joan Lovely will probably be the next state senator. She worked hard and she ran a good campaign, so …

Manning Finishes Third, Calls Effort A+

Mary-Ellen Manning finished third in Thursday's Democratic Party primary for the Second Essex District seat in the state Senate.

Mary-Ellen Manning, who served on the Governor’s Council for 12 years, said she gave an “A+” effort after losing in the race for the Second Essex District seat in the state Senate. She finished third in Thursday’s Democratic Party primary, behind winner Joan Lovely and John Slattery. Edward Carroll was fourth. The district includes Danvers, plus Beverly, Peabody, Salem and Topsfield. “I couldn’t feel any better even if we did win,” Manning told a room full of supporters at her campaign headquarters in Peabody Square on Thursday night. Manning stepped above her supporters to speak just after 8:30 p.m., announcing that she was not going to win. Manning, of Peabody, said she was “honored and humbled” to serve as a Governor’s Councilor from …

Despite Heated Senate Race, Low Voter Turnout Expected in Primary

Local election officials predict anywhere from 9 to 23 percent turnout Thursday at the polls for the state primary.

Despite a hotly contested state Senate race here on the North Shore and a handful of candidates vying for an opening on the Governor's Council, local election officials are predicting a relatively low turnout in Thursday's state primary election. Those expectations are based on historical turnout at the polls and due to the fact that the primary is two weeks before it usually is held and it's on a Thursday this year instead of a Tuesday. Danvers Town Clerk Joe Collins says he expects 15-20 percent of voters to come out (there are approximately 18,000 registered voters in Danvers), while Beverly City Clerk Kathleen Connolly anticipates no more than 9 or 10 percent -- possibly less -- which was the turnout for the presidential primary. That …

Senate Candidates Say Clear Differences in Campaigns

The four Democrats running to replace retiring Sen. Fred Berry in the 2nd Essex District stopped by Brooksby Village in Peabody for a candidate forum Thursday.

The four Democratic candidates for state Senate continued to sound the same campaign themes Thursday in a forum at Brooksby Village, now just two weeks away from the September state primary. By the end of the hour-long event, approximately 100 seniors had stopped in to listen to the candidates speak – each person was allotted 15 minutes. “I’m the only candidate with a plan,” said Salem’s Edward Carroll, going first. He went on to explain his signature campaign proposal for a hotel and casino resort at the site of the Salem power plant instead of Footprint Power bringing in its natural gas facility. Carroll, a retired Essex County deputy sheriff and one-term Governor’s Councilor, said his plan takes advantage of Salem’s deep-water harbor to…

Senate Candidates Debate — Is It Called Taxes or Revenue Enhancement?

The four Democrats seeking to win the party's nomination for the Second Essex District seat in the Sept. 6 primary debated at Beverly High School on Thursday night.

Is “revenue enhancement” a code word for taxes? That was one of the questions up for debate on Thursday night by the Democratic Party candidates for state Senate in the Second Essex District, which includes Danvers. It also encompasses Peabody, Salem, Beverly and Topsfield. “You’ll be hearing that a lot tonight,” said Mary-Ellen Manning, after fellow Democrat John Slattery said, in response to a question, that the state needs to invest more in public transportation. Manning said she is against raising taxes to increase funding to important programs. "I don't think that's the first solution, I think that's the last solution," she said, later adding that she instead favors eliminating duplicate services and pork-barrel projects. But Slattery…

Slattery Talks Spending, Footprint, Undocumented Workers, His Record in Live Chat

John Slattery fielded a wide range of questions from readers on Thursday.

State Senate candidate John Slattery talked government spending, budget priorities, undocumented workers, the Salem power plant, medical marijuana and more Thursday in a live chat with Danvers Patch readers. klassysalem: I saw your comments on SATV the other day. Is there a relationship between your comment that government spending has been cut to the bone, with no waste, and the fact that you've been endorsed by so many public employee unions? What should those endorsements tell me, as someone who has to fund those public union salaries? John Slattery: I don't think there is any question that the state legislature has worked for the past several years to eliminate waste and duplication from the budget. They have enacted reforms to the …

He Said, She Said — Senate Candidates Appear On 'Salem Now!'

Carroll, Lovely, Manning and Slattery appeared on 'Salem Now!' on Tuesday night; here are highlights from that appearance.

The candidates for the 2nd Essex District state Senate seat, which represents Salem, Peabody Beverly, Danvers and Topsfield, sat down with Salem Now! host Leo Jodoin on Tuesday night at SATV. Present were Democratic candidates Edward Carroll, Joan Lovely, Mary-Ellen Manning and John Slattery, who answered questions submitted by viewers. The lone Republican candidate, Richard Jolitiz of Beverly, did not attend the program and Jodoin had some words for him. "As far as I'm concerned I know one candidate not to vote for," Jodoin said at the beginning of the program. "Shame on him…I don't want to thank Mr. Jolitz for not showing up," he said. Jodoin said if Jolitz wants to come after the election "I'll deal with you then." Voters will hit the …
