The "fiscal cliff" deal reached Tuesday night will preserve some tax cuts and allow others to expire.
U.S. Rep. John Tierney joined a majority of the U.S. House of Representatives in passing the Senate's "fiscal cliff" deal Tuesday night, averting a potential calamity for many taxpayers and setting new tax rates for some. Tierney, D-Salem, represents the 5th Congressional District, which includes Danvers. He was reeelcted in November is a close and contentious election. Highlights of the agreement include: “President Obama and the Senate came to an agreement on a deal to prevent the country from going over the fiscal cliff," Tierney wrote in a statement Wednesday morning. President, Congress have just a few days to avert automatic tax increases and spending cuts. A number of Massachusetts Congressman suggest cutting nuclear programs instead.
Starbucks baristas are writing "come together" on all cups in the Washington, DC, area to encourage Congress and the President to come together to fix the fiscal cliff issue. For more information about this initiative, go to www.patch.com/fixthedebt. Congress and President Obama are racing against the clock this week as they make one last attempt to hammer out a deal to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” the U.S. government is set to go over on New Year’s Day. Without a compromise deal to lower the deficit, the government will face a self-imposed deadline that triggers both spending cuts and higher taxes. Congress itself set the Jan. 1 deadline after failing to come to a budget compromise earlier this year. On Jan. 1, the George W. Bush-…

I think we probably have enough nukes. I would be surprised to learn that we are still building more missiles and bombers. If this 200 billion is for the manufacture of more then it can probably be cut. However this only shifts spending from one US business to another. Americans build bombers. These Americans lose jobs if their employers lose these contracts. It is just a shuffle. What we really …   more ›
The battle for the 6th District seat is over.
Congressman John Tierney has defeated Republican challenger Richard Tisei in an extremely tight race for Massachusetts 6th District congressional seat. This has been an unusually high-profile congressional race in Massachusetts, which is considered a stronghold for House Democrats. Tierney suffered from the impact of a family scandal involving his wife, her brother and her brother’s illegal offshore gambling business. Tisei, on the other hand, climbed to popularity with his aggressive campaign, his theme of bipartisanship and his years of serving in the state legislature. He out-raised Tierney in campaign donations every quarter. Tisei made Tierney’s family legal scandal a focus of the campaign, calling Tierney’s credibility into question…

I used to live in Massachusetts, and I know how idiotic the voters there are--they keep voting in the same slimy, paid off criminals year after year. I hope you enjoy all the higher taxes, higher unemployment, higher energy costs, inflation and misery coming everyone's way now that you dumb democrats have reelected an inept, progressive, socialist liberal president hell bent on making "everyone …   more ›

The election is less than two weeks away. In the Massachusetts Sixth District, voters will decide who their next congressman will be. Incumbent Democrat John Tierney is in an intense race against Republican challenger Richard Tisei and Libertarian Daniel Fishman. The campaign has gained national attention. All this, in the midst of a federal budget crisis, Medicare, student loans, abortion, high unemployment and more. We want to know what issue is the biggest deciding factor in your vote in the 6th District race. Discuss…

Libertarian Congressional candidate Daniel Fishman has been left out of a debate, and he's not backing down.
Libertarian Congressional candidate Daniel Fishman has filed a complaint against WCVB with the Federal Elections Commission. WCVB is planning a 6th District congressional candidates' debate on Thursday, and Fishman was not invited because he did not meet their criteria: A candidate must have a certain number of staff members, a daily campaign schedule, communicate on a regular basis with news media, garner at least 10 percent in two recent independent polls and have campaign contributions of at least $50,000. The debate will include U.S. Rep. John Tierney (D-Salem) and Republican challenger Richard Tisei, the two major party candidates seeking the seat in the Sixth Congressional District, which includes Danvers. Fishman's complaint …

Will the Boston Globe's endorsement of Richard Tisei have impact on the race?
Republican congressional candidate Richard Tisei has picked up the endorsement of the state's largest newspaper, The Boston Globe. The Globe cited Congressman John Tierney's family legal issues combined with Tisei's politically moderate nature: "Tierney’s family scandal — and his evasive handling of it — gives voters a reason to look elsewhere. Meanwhile, he has an appealing Republican challenger, a moderate who served with distinction as minority leader in the state Senate. This year, Sixth District voters should elect that challenger, Richard Tisei." The Sixth Congressional District includes Danvers. The editorial says that while Tisei is further to the right than the majority of voters on some issues -- citing his call to repeal the …
Congressman John Tierney called his opponent, Richard Tisei, "shameless" and "irrelevant" in the most recent debate between the two candidates.
Democratic Congressman John Tierney brought sharpened teeth to debate with Republican opponent Richard Tisei on NECN during the past week, and he wasted no time digging in. Just one day after the 6th District congressional candidates gathered in North Andover for a debate, the two appeared on "The Broadside" with Jim Braude on Thursday evening and left most of the pleasantries at the door. Tierney faces an intense battle for reelection, with many polls showing Tisei either ahead of him or surging upward, and the eight-term congressman worked to aggressively take his opponent down a few notches Thursday -- attacking his decades-long state legislator record and calling him "shameless." Video of the entire debate can be watched on NECN's Web …
