Firefighters' Unions Pledge Support to Slattery in Senate Race

Both the Peabody and Salem unions have endorsed Slattery for state Senate.

John Slattery has garnered the endorsements of two local firefighters' unions in his bid for the state Senate, the former Peabody legislator announced this week. Both the Peabody Firefighters, IAFF Local 925, and the Salem Firefighters, IAFF Local 172, pledged their support to Slattery. Slattery, a Peabody Democrat, former city councilor and state representative, initially announced the news via his campaign Facebook page. On March 18, Slattery kicked off his campaign at the John Archer Home in Danvers. He thanked the executive boards and members of each union, noting the endorsements were unanimous pledges from each unions' body. "It is a privilege to stand with our brave Peabody and Salem firefighters," he said. Slattery is running …

Slattery has the Union bosses in the bag? Or they have him in the bag? He sold voters out years ago with his death penalty changed vote. Union leaders do not give their big money donations for nothing. I wouldn't touch slattery with a ten foot pole.   more ›

Manning Talks North Shore Unification at Democratic Town Meeting

State Senate candidate Mary Ellen Manning spoke to supporters Thursday night at the Danvers Democratic Town Committee Meeting.

Govenor's Councilor Mary Ellen Manning spoke before a modest crowd at the Danvers Democratic Town Committee meeting on March 22 at the Peabody Institute Library, detailing her plans if elected for State Senate. Manning hopes to replace veteran state Sen. Fred Berry (D-Peabody), who is retiring this year. His district includes Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, Salem and Topsfield. Of Berry, Manning said: "No one can fill his shoes, I'll never challenge that." She did say, however, she would look forward to carrying forward initiatives that Berry believed in. Manning detailed three aspects of her campaign that she vowed to protect if elected: carry forward every initiative that Fred Berry believed she should carry on, protecting the rights of both …

Slattery: Building Consensus is Key to Get Things Done in Legislature

State Senate candidate John Slattery of Peabody spoke to supporters Sunday afternoon at an informal gathering in Danvers.

[Editor's Note: This article has been updated to reflect a correction. John Slattery did spend some of his childhood in Beverly, but later lived in Peabody and Saugus. He graduated from Saugus High School.] John Slattery says the key to getting anything accomplished on Beacon Hill is building consensus and making important legislation "palatable" to fellow lawmakers. That's what Slattery, 53 and a candidate for state Senate in the 2nd Essex District, told a crowd of about 40 supporters in Danvers on Sunday. The informal afternoon meet and greet event was hosted by Democrat John Archer at his home. Slattery had just come off a meeting with the Danvers Democratic Town Committee the day before as he ramps up his campaign efforts. He's also …

Slattery to Kick Campaign Off in Danvers This Sunday

A meet and greet will be held in Danvers on March 18 from 2-4 p.m. at the home of John Archer, who lives at 10 North St.

Peabody's John Slattery, one of three Democratic candidates vying for the 2nd Essex District seat in the state Senate, will be kicking off his campaign this Sunday in Danvers. Salem city councilor Joan Lovely got her campaign underway with supporters at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem last Sunday and Governor's Councilor Mary-Ellen Manning (also a Peabody resident) was the first out of the gate, holding a campaign event at the Elks Club in Peabody in January. All three are practicing attorneys and hoping to fill the shoes of retiring Senator and Peabody native Fred Berry. Slattery's meet and greet this Sunday will be at the home of John Archer (10 North St.) from 2-4 p.m. The campaign also launched an official website last month and is now on…

The issue isn't about the death penalty. I understand arguments on both sides of the issue. Bob Curley changed his position after much soul searching. John Slattery did it based on political expedience. This is exactly the type of guy that cannot be trusted.   more ›
