Why is the Children's Room at the Library Closed During School Vacation?

The answer, if you don't know, is because there's a remodeling project going on.

The basement at the Peabody Institute Library is in the midst of another remodeling project -- a much needed update to the Children's Room, says library staff. The Children's Room will actually be closed to the public during School Vacation Week, April 16-19, so a new circulation desk can be installed. New carpeting, which is another piece of the remodeling project, won't be installed until May. Fundraising for the project started a few years ago with pancake breakfasts, charitable dinners and other community efforts. Former Library Director Doug Rendell said at the time that the Children's Room had more or less been neglected since the entire library was renovated in the 1980s. He said tables and chairs, which were also heavy and unwieldy…

Injured Goose Rescued From Frozen Pond

An injured goose was rescued off the ice at Mill Pond on Monday afternoon.

Danvers firefighters helped rescue a Canadian goose from a frozen Mill Pond on Monday, getting it safely taken to Danvers Animal Hospital for care. The rescue took place off Pond Street near Peabody Institute Library at about 4 p.m. A passer-by thought that the goose was stuck in the ice and called the Fire Department. Firefighters arrived to find that the goose was not stuck in the ice on the frozen pond. "It wasn't stuck at all, but it was injured," said firefighter David Mondi. Firefighters crawled out to the goose and "coaxed it in," Mondi said. The goose had an injured wing and "obviously couldn't fly." Nobody could be reached immediately at Danvers Animal Hospital on Monday evening to get an update on the goose's injuries.
