In addition to a road closure and detour, mineral oil also had to be cleaned up along Route 114 after several utility poles snapped this past week.
When strong winds ripped down more than a half dozen utility poles along Route 114 on Thursday, it also created a small oil spill. The utility poles bent and snapped just before 10 a.m. causing the road to be closed and detouring thousands of cars through a side street and through a Danvers neighborhood. The poles were repaired and the road reopened for the Friday morning commute. When the poles came down, one of the poles had a transformer on it and it smashed on the road, releasing about 45 gallons of non-PCB mineral oil, or MODF - Mineral Oil Dielectric Fluid. The closure and detour of a section of Route 114 at the Danvers-Peabody line has come to an end in time for the morning commute on Friday.
A stretch of Route 114 that was closed for most of the day on Thursday is open for the morning commute on Friday. A one-third mile stretch of road at the Danvers-Peabody line was closed just before 10 a.m. on Thursday when strong winds tore down several utility poles, sending wires, poles and transformers to the street. Utility crews and emergency workers had the road closed into Thursday evening but it reopened overnight on Thursday and repairs were completed. Peabody police sent out a Nixle alert at 5:54 a.m. saying that the road was open again.

Workers will continue to make repairs to utility poles along Route 114 on Thursday evening that will cause the road to remain closed and drivers will be detoured.
Drivers will continue to be detoured around a section of Route 114 at the Danvers-Peabody line into the rush hour as work continues to repair several utility poles that came down in a wind storm on Thursday morning. The good news? Almost all of the electric customers that were without power earlier in the day have their power back. But workers continue to “set” the damaged poles, as of 4 p.m. That means about a one-third mile stretch of road is blocked to through traffic and is being detoured. “We’ve haven’t set all the poles yet,” said Randi Holland at Peabody Municipal Light Plant. Crews from both Danvers and Peabody were on scene along Route 114 on Thursday after several utility poles came crashing down to the road in gusty winds.
It remained unclear at midday Thursday how long Route 114 would remain closed at the Danvers-Peabody line. A squall line of rain and wind swept through the area just before 10 a.m. on Thursday, ripping down utility poles and wires right at the line between the two communities near the Outback Steakhouse. The wires and poles down in the road forced its closure. There were three utility poles on the road and another five that were bent or leaning at about noon. A major highway has been closed on Thursday morning because of downed utility lines.
Route 114 has been closed on Thursday morning after several utility poles came crashing down to the road as a rain shower and gusty winds moved through the area. It happened at about 9:50 a.m. at the Danvers-Peabody line near Outback Steakhouse. Danvers Police said on its Facebook page that “emergency crews are currently on scene but the road is being closed for safety; Avoid the area at this time and check back for updates.” Peabody Police reported that about six poles were either down on the road or bent.
