Danvers voted for Scott Brown and owns fewer hybrid cars than the state average.
Danvers is brown and red: That’s what we found when we compared data from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to the vote in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. You can see the results in the map above: Large circles suggest towns with more hybrid ownership per capita, and the red/blue color suggests which way those towns voted last year. In Danvers, 13.3 of every 1,000 vehicles is a hybrid, compared to the state average of 18. Patch’s research suggests the state has a good number of what might be called “green Republican” communities. More than 40 percent of the communities where Republican Scott Brown carried the vote have an above average numbers of hybrids. A UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll shows he is in a strong position to run in 2014.
Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll this week show former Senator Scott Brown is more popular than he was when he lost his re-election bid last fall and is in a strong position to run for governor in 2014. The independent, nonpartisan poll surveyed 600 Massachusetts registered voters between Saturday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 5. With regard to Brown, the poll — which asked voters for their opinions on whether they would vote for Brown if he runs for governor — showed he has considerable bipartisan support, with 32.7 percent saying they are very likely to vote for him and 26 percent somewhat likely. The U.S. Senate race will have a Democratic primary, and a Libertarian candidate has now announced. But there is still no Republican contender.
With state Republicans still scrambling to find someone to run in the race for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State, we do have some other contenders who have jumped into the fray. On Monday, Libertarian Daniel Fishman announced he would attempt to get on the ballot for the U.S. Senate special election. Fishman, who lives in neighboring Beverly, garnered more than 16,000 votes in the 6th Congressional District election last fall finishing third behind Congressman John Tierney (D-Salem) and Republican candidate Richard Tisei. Former Massachusetts Senate minority leader Richard Tisei announced that he will not run in the special Senate election to fill the seat vacated by John Kerry. On Friday, after former Sen. Scott Brown announced that he will not run for the seat, all eyes turned to Tisei, who announced he was considering running. But on Saturday evening, Tisei put a stop to that, citing bad timing and a desire to see others have a shot at the seat. Scott Brown ended speculation Friday afternoon as to whether he would run for U.S. Senate, announcing that he is not entering the race for the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to the post of Secretary of State. Two Democratic political opponents – Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) – will face off in the April 30 primary with the special election set for June 25. There are currently no Republican candidates in the race. Markey, who represents the 5th Congressional District, kicked off his campaign in December. The "fiscal cliff" deal reached Tuesday night will preserve some tax cuts and allow others to expire.
U.S. Rep. John Tierney joined a majority of the U.S. House of Representatives in passing the Senate's "fiscal cliff" deal Tuesday night, averting a potential calamity for many taxpayers and setting new tax rates for some. Tierney, D-Salem, represents the 5th Congressional District, which includes Danvers. He was reeelcted in November is a close and contentious election. After President Obama’s selection of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there’s a lot of interest in the senior senator’s seat.
With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21. If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election. Names have already been dropped locally and from afar. Lt. Governor Tim Murray couldn't hold out any longer. On Thursday, he told the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce he'd like to be governor, according to WBUR. Mind you, he didn't say he would run, just that he wants to be governor. With the election two years away, starting an official campaign now would be a bit premature. But Murray's not alone. Governor Deval Patrick has said he will not run in 2014, leaving the door open for Murray and a host of other suitors. State treasurer Steve Grossman and 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker have also expressed interest in a run in 2014. The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would become the next Secretary of State. Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014. U.S. Senator Scott Brown will leave office in January. What should he do next?
U.S. Senator Scott Brown, a Republican, was defeated Tuesday by first time candidate Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat. Warren will take office as the state's junior senator in January. She'll replace Brown, who was elected in a special election in January 2010 when he defeated Democrat Martha Coakley. In his concession speech on Tuesday night, Brown told his supporters that "defeat is only temporary." As soon as the race was called, analysts began suggesting Brown may run for Massachusetts governor in 2014 or would seek the state's other U.S. Senate seat if Senator John Kerry is named Secretary of State under President Barack Obama in his second term. The conclusions this article makes are seriously flawed. In order to draw a corelation between the GOP and green technology, you must show that it is actually republicans who own the hybrids. Since hybrids and EVs are significantly more expensive than their gas powered counterparts, I suspect it is the affluence of a city or town not it's voting record that influences hybrid ownership. more ›
