How Much Money Has Danvers Spent on Snow Removal?

The town has used up 96 percent of its snow and ice budget this winter. No more snow would be appreciated.

Barring anymore surprise snowstorms, Danvers will squeak in just under budget for snow and ice removal this winter. The latest report from Public Works Director of Operations Bob Lee shows the town has spent $667,883 to clean up 61 inches of snow that has fallen in Danvers between Nov. 7 and March 20. That leaves just $27,306 remaining in the budget. The most expensive storm this winter was the February blizzard, which dropped 24 inches and cost the town $156,062 in one day (Feb. 8). The second most expensive storm was March 7-8 at $114,524. Trash Pickup Halted Because of Safety Concerns

Trash and recycling pickup will not be completed on Friday in Danvers.

Trash and recycling collection in Danvers was suspended on Friday morning because of safety concerns. The Danvers Department of Public Works made the announcement at 10:27 a.m. on Friday. "If your Friday trash and recycling has not been picked up yet, please take it in," the DPW said in its alert. Any trash and recycling that was not picked up on Friday will be picked up on Monday. "Please have it out by 7 a.m. on Monday, March 11," the DPW said. Initially, the DPW said that trash pickup would happen on Friday and some pickup did happen. But the safety concerns related to the snowstorm prompted it to be halted.

Snow Budget Shrinks as Another Storm Moves In

Another weekend snowstorm that could bring as much as a foot of snow is headed toward Danvers for the weekend.

Less than half of the town's snow budget is left as another winter storm is forecasted to move into Danvers this weekend. If the forecast materializes, it will be the third weekend snowstorm this month. Some forecasts call for close to a foot of snow in Danvers, but other possible tracks send it to the west and could bring only 1-3 inches to the North Shore. "This weekend, it's more snow, and a foot where it stays all snow, perhaps a few towns picking up more," writes WHDH-TV meteorologist Chris Lambert is his latest blog. At some point, the snow may mix with sleet or rain in Danvers, Lambert said, likely on Saturday evening as the wind comes in from the east. Well, in all fairness to the plow operators, remember - it WAS 2 feet of snow to move around. And that poor guy in the sidewalk snow thrower struggled to get the downtown area neighborhoods cleared out. He passed by my office a couple of times and had to clear the chute multiple times. S'No More! 4-8 Inches of Snow Saturday Into Sunday

Danvers could see around a half a foot of more snow Saturday night into Sunday.

There are still huge snowbanks everywhere from the Blizzard of '13, even after moderate temperatures this week, but Old Man Winter isn't done with Danvers yet. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect until Sunday at 1 p.m. for a storm that will pass through the area starting Saturday night. The forecast calls for 1-3 inches of snow on Saturday night and another 3-5 inches on Sunday, mainly before 4 p.m. Visibility won't be great either, as winds could gust as high as 43 mph on Sunday, blowing the snow around and producing wind chill values as low as -2 on Sunday night. The gusty winds will continue on Presidents Day, which will be sunny with a high near 32 but wind chill values as low as -4.

Weekend Blizzard May Make Travel 'Nearly Impossible'

A storm moving into the Danvers area first thing on Friday maybe more than just a snowstorm, forecasters now say it has the potential to be a blizzard that combines heavy snow and strong winds.

Friday’s storm is shaping up to be on par with some of the most legendary winter storms in New England history, according to meteorologists. Wednesday afternoon forecasters, including the National Weather Service, said the storm would deliver more than just a lot of snow - it has the potential to be a blizzard. That had caused the weather service to issue a blizzard watch for Danvers and much of eastern Massachusetts. The watch means that “there is a potential for considerable falling and/or blowing snow with sustained winds or frequent gusts over 35 miles per hour and visibilities below a quarter mile for at least 3 hours.” The watch is in effect from Friday morning through Saturday afternoon. Morning Commute May Again Include Snow on Tuesday

Another morning commuter may include snowfall on Tuesday.

For the second time in less than a week, a snowstorm may gunk up the morning commute. A winter storm watch has been issued for Danvers for Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. The watch means that there is the potential for accumulating snow of 6 inches or more in a 12-hour period or 8 inches or more in a 24-hour period. The snow is expected to start to fall late Monday afternoon or early Monday evening. The storm may impact the Tuesday morning commute and make roads slippery, the weather service said. It could the second time in six days that a morning commute includes snowfall. Was Wednesday Morning's Snowstorm Under-Hyped?

For some people, the 4 inches of snow that fell on Wednesday morning was a surprise.

Wednesday's morning's snowstorm was just the second measurable snow of the winter and came at the most inopportune time - smack dab in the middle of the morning commute. Most North Shore schools - including Danvers Public Schools and St. John's Prep - were not cancelled or delayed. Most businesses were open as usual and drivers embarked on their usual commute as the snow was coming down. The slippery roads contributed to about a dozen crashes in Danvers according to the Danvers Police log. None of the accidents were serious or caused any injury, police spokesman Sgt.
