St. John's Prep Plans to Add Middle School, New Academic and Fitness Centers

The private Catholic high school in Danvers has some ambitious plans in the works for the next five years.

School officials at St. John's Prep unveiled a development plan last week to build a new science, math and technology building for the high school, along with a new wellness center, and add a comprehensive middle school program. The strategic plan, Prep 20/20, centers on "academic excellence, student life and the school’s mission," say school officials. In addition to the new buildings, Advanced Placement and technology course offerings will be expanded and the plan also focuses on growing the Catholic boys' school's endowment to support its tuition assistance program. There is no price tag associated with the overall project at this point. The 175-acre campus sprawls on either side of Spring and Summer streets, off Route 62 in Danvers. "…

St. John's Prep Freshman Injured by Bomb Blast at Marathon

A student at the private Catholic high school was among the hundreds injured Monday and hit with shrapnel from a bomb.

Danvers Patch has learned that a freshman at St. John's Prep was among the hundreds injured in a bomb blast at the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday. The school, in a post to Facebook, initially said it was unaware of any students, teachers or others members of the school community who were injured in the explosions, but then updates began to trickle in about staff members who were running the race, along with the student, who was apparently a bystander. The male student reportedly did not suffer any life-threatening injuries, but was hit by shrapnel from one of the bombs and will require minor surgery. Dullea Tapped for Head Coach of SJP Basketball

John Dullea, who has coached alongside fellow Peabodyite Sean Connolly at St. John's Prep for the past five years, was promoted to take the reins this week. Connolly resigned last month.

Peabody's John Dullea is taking the reins of the St. John's Prep varsity basketball program. School officials announced the promotion for Dullea, who has been an assistant coach for the Eagles since 2009, on Monday. He replaces Sean Connolly, who resigned two weeks ago after five seasons as head coach, citing a need to focus on completing his graduate studies. "As assistant coach, John was instrumental in bringing our basketball program into a new era of unprecedented success. We feel confident that with John leading the program as head coach, St. John’s will continue to achieve at the same high level,” said SJP Principal Keith Crowley. Schools Closed on Tuesday

An overnight snowstorm has closed public and parochial schools in Danvers on Tuesday.

Danvers Public Schools, St. John's Prep and Essex Agricultural and Technical High School in Danvers are all closed on Tuesday. That's according to a list of closures compiled by WHDH-TV's Stormforce. The closure comes because of the overnight snowstorm that dropped several inches of snow and it continues to snow at daybreak. North Shore Community College said that all of its offices are closed on Tuesday and all classes are cancelled, according to a post on the college's Facebook page.

Heavy, Wet Snow and Strong Winds Expected to Blow in Thursday

The snow on Thursday could bring in several inches of snow, strong winds and possible power outages.

The storm headed our way Wednesday night is now forecasted to drop several inches of snow, a drastic turnaround in a forecast for a storm that that had been predicted to be a “near miss” or rainstorm. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch at 3:58 p.m. on Tuesday for portions of the North Shore that runs from Thursday morning through Friday morning, meaning that there is the potential for 6 or more inches of snow in a 12 hour period or 8 or more inches of snow in a 24 hour period. The watch includes much of the North Shore and southern New Hampshire except for Danvers and the immediate coastline. Instead, just a few inches are expected right along the coast. Prep Wins Big, Takes Div. 1 Super Bowl

St. John's Prep had a huge win on Saturday night.

The St. John’s Prep Eagles are 2012 Div. 1 Super Bowl Champions, after a convincing 48-28 win over Brockton High School on Saturday night. The win came at Bentley University in Walthan for the Eagles, who end the season at 11-1. It was the Eagles second win over the Boxers this season, following a 27-12 win in week 4.
