Members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas say they plan to picket outside Saturday night's production of "The Laramie Project" at St. John's Prep.
A Kansas-based church known for its picketing at the funerals of soldiers says it plans to come to Danvers on Saturday evening. Members of Westboro Baptist Church plan to stage a picket outside St. John's Prep on Saturday night, where "The Laramie Project" will be performed. The performance tells the story of Matthew Shepard, a gay college who was murdered in Laramie, Wy. in 1998. The church targets performances with pickets, saying that God hates the United States because of its acceptance of homosexuality. Shirley Phelps-Roper, a Westboro Church spokeswoman, said that as many as six members of the church plan to picket. "It's a propaganda piece," Phelps-Roper said in an phone interview from Kansas. Peabody firefighter Jim Rice's classmates at St. John's Prep will be holding a memorial service Saturday.
Fallen Peabody firefighter James Rice will be remembered by his former classmates at St. John's Prep on Saturday. Rice, who died last December in the line of duty, graduated from the Prep in 1987, along with fellow Peabody firefighter (now Captain) John Hosman and Danvers police officer Steven MacDonald, who organized Saturday's memorial service. The ceremony, which is slated for noon at the entrance to the Brother Linus, CFX Athletic Commons, will also include the dedication of a memorial stone engraved with Rice's name. Meet Evan Scollard, a Lynnfield resident and St. John's Prep senior who recently published his first novel.
A 17 year old senior at St. John's Prep has published his first novel after about a year of steady writing. Evan Scollard, who is a Lynnfield resident, had the novel, "Without Regard To Fortune" published earlier this year and it is currently available on Amazon and through Barnes and Noble. The publishing process was through AuthorHouse and reportedly took about five months. The book, as described on the Amazon page, tells the coming of age story of Miles Carlyn, a timid and wealthy New England blue blood who goes on to serve in the Vietnam War. In a recent conversation with Patch, Scollard said that he spent much of the past year writing - often for an hour a night on school nights after doing his homework, followed by four or five more …

A great way to start the day with a quick look at the events and happenings in town.
Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily resource for community events, happenings in town and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Thursday, Aug. 9. 1. Hot: On Wednesday, we saw the muggies and some heat return. The heat will stay in place on Thursday with the possibility of the temperatures getting to 90 degrees. There’s also a slight chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. 2. Lacrosse: It was a year ago that crews were in town filming “Crooked Arrows” at St. John’s Prep and other areas on the North Shore. Well, the film is now in theaters. It opened back in May and is still in a handful of theaters. Right now, none of the theaters its in are east of the Mississippi River. 3. Affordable Housing: One unit in…

St. John's Prep alum is NFL offensive coordinator, leaving to be head coach at Penn State.
INDIANAPOLIS – Before Bill O’Brien leaves the Patriots for his new head coaching position at Penn State he wants to win a Super Bowl ring. The St. John’s Preparatory alum, who serves as current offensive coordinator under Bill Belichick, has had the taxing responsibility of National Signing Day falling on the same week he was preparing for Super Bowl XLVI against the Giants. “Bill [Belichick] has really helped here as far as the offensive staff and some administrative people that have helped me in New England when I haven’t been here," he said, "and then I think I’ve put together one of the best staffs in the country at Penn State, and they’ve hit the ground running up there."
