Stop & Shop Averts Strike, Workers Reach Deal

Workers at Stop $ Shop have reached a contract deal and will not strike.

Stop & Shop will not need to bring temporary workers to its Danvers store after the grocery chain reached a preliminary deal with its union on Monday, reports the Boston Herald. The agreement between the company and 40,000 workers in the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union was reached at 4 a.m. on Monday, the paper reports. The union covers workers at the chain's stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The chain, which is headquarters in Quincy but it owned by the Dutch corporation Ahold, had set up hiring centers in January to hire temporary workers in case of a strike. Contracts Expire Saturday for Stop & Shop Unions

Labor contracts for tens of thousands of Stop & Shop workers expire this weekend and the company has been advertising for replacement workers in case of a strike.

Contracts for five unions representing 40,000 Stop & Shop workers across New England are set to expire on Saturday, reports Supermarket News. Those contracts cover workers at the Stop & Shop supermarket in Danvers Plaza on Route 1 in Danvers. The unions - United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 328, 371, 919, 1445 and 1459 - have a meeting set with company officials on Sunday, Supermarket news reports. If the unions strike, Stop & Shop has hired temporary workers, reports the Boston Business Journal. Man Found Passed Out in Supermarket Lot Charged With OUI Drugs

A Danvers man faces charges after an incident in the parking lot of a supermarket in Peabody on Tuesday.

A 20-year-old Danvers man was issued a court summons for driving under the influence of drugs, following a report of suspicious activity at Stop & Shop in Peabody on Tuesday. A caller at 2:53 p.m. reported a male was passed out behind the wheel of his car, which was parked out in the store lot. The man, who was not named by police, was taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital and his car was towed. The above information came from the Peabody Police Department press log from Jan. 8-9.

Turkey prices range from 59 cents to $2.99 per pound this week at the grocery stores in Danvers and nearby. Here's a sampling of turkey prices (per pound) at Hannaford, Market Basket, McKinnon's, Shaw's, Stop and Stop and Trader Joe's. In addition to the brands and prices listed in the chart, some other turkeys available include fresh Chef Master for $1.99 and fresh Plainville for $2.99 per pound at McKinnon's. What movies has Danvers been renting? In the past week, the most rented movie at Redbox locations in Danvers was “The Five Year Engagement,” which came out last Tuesday. Other movies such as “Battleship,” “The Cabin in the Woods,” “What To Expect When You’re Expecting,” “Safe,” Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax,” and “The Hunger Games” all remained in just about the same spots at near the top for the third straight week. “The Unknown,” “The Dictator” and “Three Stooges” have all been out for at least several weeks and each moved up two spots in the past week. I’m not surprised that Cabin in the Woods is number one since it’s one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in years. The ending was very original, and unexpected.
