Five local taxi services are hoping the board will grant them full licenses to operate in town after three companies were initially fined and ordered to stop picking up Danvers customers due to a lack of proper town permits.
Three taxi companies were fined and ordered to stop picking up customers in Danvers because they didn't have proper town licenses in February, but then were temporarily allowed by the Board of Selectmen to resume operations the next week after submitting their license applications. Those cab companies and two others will be appearing before the board this week for their full licenses. Each company already operates existing taxi services in neighboring communities, which is why selectmen agreed to the temporary permits. Nd-A-Ryd, Salem Taxi Company, North Shore Taxi, Land Jet and Tri-City Services will have their applications considered Tuesday night (7 p.m.). Each company is only asking to license one or two cars, except for Salem Taxi …

Three taxi companies that have pending taxi licenses filed with the town of Danvers were given a temporary OK on Tuesday to immediately start picking up customers again.
Three local taxi companies were given a temporary OK on Tuesday to immediately start picking up customers after a compliance check last week found no licensed companies with a town license. The Danvers Board of Selectmen said that since North Shore Taxi, ND-A-RYD and Salem Taxi all have valid licenses in neighboring towns and have applied for a license from Danvers, each company can make pickups in Danvers until a public hearing in April on whether the companies should be granted a full license. Even them, the board could issue a temporary license if the companies fall short of the town's requirements. Technically, the Selectmen's vote gave companies that have already submitted applications "permission to operate," said Town Manager Wayne …

The four cab companies that regularly operate in Danvers were fines on Tuesday and told they need a license to pick up passengers in Danvers.
There are no licensed cab companies in Danvers and on Tuesday night cabs operating in Danvers were given a $100 fine for picking up a fare in town, reports the Salem News. The cabs were called to the Liberty Tree Mall and when they arrived to pick up a passenger were given a $100 fine, the News said. "We were told if they see us in Danvers, we would be pulled over and be fined again,” the general manager of North Shore Taxi in Peabody Sean McKinnon told the paper. While any taxi companies can drop off fares in town, a license is needed to pick up in Danvers. The sting occurred after concern was raised with Police Chief Neil Oullette earlier this month by the Board of Selectmen. After a bylaw change in 2009, town officials got several …

Although I disagree with the way this particular situation was handled at this point in time I am glad my town is checking the legitimacy of taxi companies operating in Danvers.
