The Falcons withstood a push by Smith Academy in the second half and went on to a 66-50 victory on Saturday to win the Division 3 state crown.
After pouncing out to a big lead early, Danvers High School withstood a push by Smith Academy on Saturday and pulled away to win a second straight Division 3 state championship. The Falcons opened up a double digit first half lead before Smith sliced its deficit to one point in the first minute of the third quarter. But Danvers’ veteran experience paid off and the locals pushed their lead back into double digits and went on to a 66-50 win. Nick McKenna led the Falcon charge with 20 points, followed by Eric Martin with 11 markers on the game. “It's great for the kids,” said Danvers head coach John Walsh. “To see how far they've come, not just as basketball players, but as people, you just can't even put it into words. They're just great …

The Falcons boys basketball team snuck past Martha's Vineyard, 50-47, on Tuesday to snag a spot in Saturday's championship game.
The Danvers High School boys basketball team won't have to wake up from its dream season for one more game. Thanks to a thrilling 50-47 win over Martha's Vineyard in the Division 3 state semifinal on Tuesday at TD Garden, the Falcons will take on Smith Academy at the DCU Center in Worcester on Saturday in hopes of bringing home a state title. "This is unbelievable," said head coach. I've only been a head coach for three years, but these are the toughest kids I've seen. They just don't compare. They're tough, tough kids." Check back with Danvers Patch on Wednesday for complete coverage of Tuesday's game.

Wilmington thumped upstart Danvers in the North Division 2 boys hockey championship game on Monday.
The Danvers High School boys hockey team pulled off several upsets on the way to the North Division 2 title game. But on Monday night at Lowell's Tsongas Center, Wilmington showed the upstart Falcons why they're the defending state champions. After scoring 1:23 into the game, the Wildcats cruised to a 7-2 victory despite a pair of goals from Falcon forward A.J. Couto. As a result, the Danvers season came to an end while Wilmington's continues to Sunday when they'll shoot for a second straight state championship. Danvers head coach Kevin Brown said his team ran into a buzzsaw on Monday night, but that it didn't take away from the run the Falcons put together to reach the title game. "Sometimes you run into a team like that in the …

Thanks to a late push on Saturday, the Falcons clinched a berth in Tuesday's Division 3 state semifinal contest.
Jake Cawlina made just three baskets during Saturday's North Division 2 final. He made sure his third one, however, was a memorable one. The Danvers senior drilled a tiebreaking trey from the corner against Wayland in the closing minutes to give the Falcons the lead. Danvers held on for the 57-52 victory and advanced to play in the state semifinal round. “We knew how tough it was going to be, how good they are, how talented they are,” said Danvers coach John Walsh. “We’ve played them in the tournament the past three years, so we were in for a fight. We knew that.” Danvers next plays at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday at TD Garden against Martha's Vineyard with a berth in the state title game on the line.

After knotting the score at 47-47, Danvers fell in the North Division 2 semifinal by a 54-47 margin.
In the quarterfinals of the North Division 2 girls basketball postseason, experience paid off over achievement. Upstart Danvers knotted the score up with Wilmington at 47-47 on Sunday, but the veteran Wildcats scored the next six points of the game to eliminate the Falcons with a 53-47 decision. "Wilmington is tested and they have some tournament experience. We have one player with true playoff experience," said head coach Pat Veilleux. "The rest of them are young pups and they have nothing to be ashamed of. This is good experience for our young kids." Danvers hopped out to an 8-2 lead, but Wilmington soon bounced back to take the lead and hold it until the Falcons tied the score late. The loss ended Danvers' campaign with a mark of 11-9. …

Photos from the Danvers vs. St. Joseph's defeat.
The Falcons defeated St. Joseph's 59-47. For complete coverage from the game, check out our recap from contributor Andrew Jeromski. For minute-to-minute game details, check out the game's live blog.
The Falcons were named Division Three State Champions on March 17.
WORCESTER—George Merry just kept on practicing. But he heard them. St. Joseph’s Central fans were riding him during pre-game warmups, saying he couldn’t dunk in a game. The 6-foot-7 center just kept on practicing layups. But late in the fourth quarter, when it was already clear that Danvers would momentarily be crowned Division III State Champions, Merry found himself on the end of a breakaway pass and slammed home a dunk. A small personal triumph amidst a larger, collective one. Predictably, the Crusaders fans didn’t have a lot to say by then. Danvers defeated St. Joseph’s Central of Pittsfield, 59-47, to capture the Division III State title yesterday at Worcester’s DCU Center, doing so despite the Crusaders largely handling the presence …
