ReplyI applaud Aaron Gornstein for acknowledging that motels aren't acceptable shelter. But the public outrage about motels has to translate into a commitment to creating
acceptable shelter and supportive housing. Otherwise, we're telling homeless families to live in their cars. So let's use our outrage to get affordable apartments identified, up to code, and inhabited. Let's turn to non-profits to provide the services families need to stay housed, and let's continue to do our part in Danvers and encourage other communities to do the same.

ReplyI loved Tapley School and feel lucky to have gone there. The building itself was a gem - the windows were enormous, the wooden floors were a rich, dark brown and they creaked, and we'd all gather at the top of the stairs for important announcements -- I recall the day they announced girls could wear pants -- and events, like the Apollo launch -- in the huge hallway in the middle of all four classrooms. And that's where we had gym. Mr. Sampson brought milk around to each classroom around 11:30 and we ate lunch at our desks. I loved Tapley School.

ReplyBernadette, you've captured the generous spirit that defines Peabody and sets it apart. Although I live in Danvers, I'm proud to be involved with Citizens for Adequate Housing and their incredible work. Thanks for sharing the CAH story and planting the seed of volunteerism, especially among high school students. Honors students or not, it doesn't matter, as long as they're willing to serve and learn in the process.
Looking forward to more great articles!
Yours in Danvers,

Pray that the new building isn't just a huge box lacking any architectural style or interest whatsoever. Somebody needs to spend time designing the building; let us hope they come up with something better than a beige rectangle with neon lighting.
