I asked Hingham Police Sgt. Steven Dearth the same question. Sgt. Dearth explained that his license was valid because all of his convictions were before 2005. It wasn't until 2005 when Melanie’s Law came into force and strengthened penalties for repeat drunken drivers. If convicted, he could lose his driver’s license for life under Melanie’s Law.
