Former Church Now a Pile of Rubble

The old Methodist church at 78 Holten St. has been demolished to make way for a new mixed-use building with a cafe and apartments above it.

The former Methodist church on Holten Street is now just a pile of wooden rubble.

On Thursday afternoon, a work crew at the site operated heavy machinery to scoop up the rubble and cart it away. A worker said the building, which dates back to 1870, was torn down Wednesday and the debris would be removed over Thursday and Friday.

The property owner, Peter Pantazelos of Danvers, is planning to construct a new building at 78 Holten St. which will house a cafe on the bottom floor with six apartments over two floors above.

An attorney for the project told town officials the old building was unsafe and needed to be torn down. The new structure will look very similar, however, is about two feet shorter and won't be as deep.

The old building used to be home to the First Methodist Church of Danvers (now Holy Trinity United Methodist) until the 1950s when a new church was built over on Sylvan Street across from the library.
