Police Say Robbery Occurred, Suspect Shot While Being Taken Into Custody

No word on the person's condition yet or how the suspect was shot with an officer's weapon.

Danvers police confirm a suspect was shot Thursday night as officers were taking the person into custody. They also assure residents it was not a random act of violence that sparked the incident.

A press release Friday morning from Chief Neil Ouellette said officers responded to the Avalon apartment complex in the 5000 block on Kirkbride Drive around 9:52 p.m. on Thursday on a report of an alleged assault. The complex is at the old Danvers state hospital.

Police determined a robbery had occurred and there were also trial court warrants out for the suspect.

"As officers were attempting to place the suspect into custody...an officer involved shooting occurred and the suspect was shot," Ouellette said.

He said the incident is being investigated by the Danvers Police Department in conjunction with the Essex County District Attorney's office and state police.

Ouellette said that investigation is ongoing and there is no further information to release at this time.

"Residents in the area should be assured that there is no risk to their safety and the initial assault was not a random event," said Ouellette.
